People have been bathing on Marstrand since the early 1800s, and the island has long been the center of the bathing life that developed in Sweden, modeled on the German, British and Dutch coasts. Sweden’s King Oscar II spent almost every summer from 1887 to 1907 on Marstrand, bringing royal splendor to the island and the societies. The so-called Kungsplanen became a natural hub for the social life that has since made Marstrand the famous place it is today. Few places like Kungsplan breathe such history, and here memories of the glamorous society era meet with the suffering prisoners of Carlsten Fortress.
